Collection: Gooseberries, currants, blackcurrants

Various varieties of gooseberry, currant and blackcurrant seedlings grown in Latvia.

  • Gooseberries contain fiber, vitamin C, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, manganese, anthocyanin, and other substances important for health.

    Growing conditions:
    Gooseberries are unpretentious and not too picky about where to grow. They are more drought-resistant than other berries, but they are heat-loving, so it is preferable to plant them in sunny places protected from north and northwest winds. However, the growing location should not be completely blocked from the winds.
    The most suitable are humus-rich sandy loam or loamy soils.
  • Currants also contain fiber, which is essential for the body – about five grams per cup. Currants also contain potassium, magnesium, vitamin C, and other substances important for health.

    Growing conditions:

    Currants are quite unpretentious and do not require much care or special growing conditions. They are relatively drought-resistant because they have a deep root system.
    It also grows well in sandy soils, but best in medium-heavy loam or clayey sand.

  • Blackcurrants also contain a large amount of natural bioflavonoids, anthocyanins, vitamin C, and other substances important for health.

    Growing conditions:
    Blackcurrants are relatively moisture-demanding, but at the same time, a regularly flooded area will not be suitable for them.
    Grows well in loamy and sandy loam soils.
