Why microorganisms are the key to healthy soil, plants and humans

Microorganisms are the invisible carriers of life, maintaining balance in every ecosystem on our planet. They live everywhere — in soil, water, air, plants, animals, and humans. A single gram of soil may contain hundreds of thousands of microbial species, each playing its own unique role.

Unfortunately, today’s soils are often depleted and lacking in microbial diversity.

Human health is directly linked to soil health. I wrote more about this in this publication: read.

Only in soil teeming with microorganisms can healthy crops grow. And only by eating such nutrient-rich food can people thrive in full health.

In this article, you’ll learn how anyone can harness the power of microorganisms to revive their garden soil, their local environment — and even themselves.

What Is the "Thrive" Method?

The Thrive Method is a next-generation microbial fertiliser DIY instruction that allows anyone to begin restoring biodiversity — from small gardens to entire ecosystems — using a simple yet highly effective process.

At its core is a microbial fertiliser made from natural materials through fermentation. This method creates a rich mixture containing thousands of beneficial microorgansims. Once applied to soil, these microorganisms interact with plants and activate nature’s self-healing powers. Plants become stronger, more resilient, and more productive. The soil becomes rich with life once more.

By working with the limitless power of microorganisms, step by step and square metre by square metre, we can help Earth flourish again.

How Did This Method Begin?

In May 2024, we planted a small forest garden in Madona municipality, Āaudona parish, using the Miyawaki method. This method basically involves densely planted various plants, soil enriched with organic materials, and most importantly - a large variety of added microorganisms. Microorganisms in this project should be the main "labor gnomes", which promote rapid growth.

In June, we prepared a microbiological fertilizer containing a large amount of various microorganisms and watered the newly planted plants with it.

The next time I saw this garden was two weeks later, and I was very surprised by the huge changes in both growth and overall plant health! It was the microorganisms in this fertilizer that played a key role in the garden's rapid flourishing!

Both this and other experiments using this method have proven that it is very influential and creates amazing changes in any environment!

This method of preparing microbiological fertilizer is based on the ancient traditions of fermentation, which humanity has been using for thousands of years - fermenting plant leaves and other organic materials. The outstanding gardener Dzambolat Kundukhov has refined this approach even further, combining a wide range of organic materials and carbohydrates to create an extremely viable living fertilizer, rich in countless species of microorganisms. Learning from the processes occurring in nature and the experience and experiments of my mother - gardener and soil researcher Guna Parfenoviča, we have perfected this method over the past two years. Now we offer it to anyone who wants to revive their garden, so that it becomes a richly thriving ecosystem! The “Thrive” method is available in simple, step-by-step instructions.

We are happy to share this recipe - instructions for growing more and more thriving, vibrant, and healthy gardens!

How does it work?

Microorganisms are the invisible foundation of life — they are microscopic, but extremely important components of living nature, found in soil, air, water, plants, animals and humans. They ensure the balance and continuity of life in nature. Without them, the existence of neither plants, nor humans, nor the entire living world would be possible.

The role of microorganisms in soil:

·    They break down organic matter and convert it into nutrients available to plants.

·     Improves soil structure, promotes air and moisture permeability

·     Helps the soil accumulate and retain nutrients and moisture

·     Protects plants from diseases

·     Promotes healthy, vibrant soil and environment.

To keep the soil healthy:

The presence of diverse microorganisms must be promoted. Today, most of the soil in the world is depleted and infertile – there is too little life in it – too few microorganisms necessary for soil and plants. By collecting various microorganisms from different environments – forests, meadows, gardens, parks, reservoirs, etc., propagating them and introducing this diversity into the soil (in the garden, greenhouse, field and elsewhere), microorganisms rapidly begin their activity and soil renewal and enrichment processes occur.

How is fertilizer prepared and used:

1. Collection – microorganisms are simply collected from various places in the environment, such as a forest, park, garden, etc.

2. Fermentation – they are placed in a container with water and carbohydrates (sugars), where the fermentation process takes place. In this way, microorganisms multiply a thousandfold within a few days, and at the same time they produce a concentrate of nutrients, vitamins, micro, macro and other elements for plants.

3. Use – the resulting liquid (fertilizer) is diluted with water and the plants are watered as needed - in the garden, greenhouse, field, indoors, in pots.

Result:

·      Plants grow faster and are healthier

·      Ingests more complete food

·      Strengthens plant immunity and resistance to stress conditions (drought, heat, cold, pest attacks, etc.)

·      The soil comes alive and regains its fertility in a naturally accelerated manner

·      The garden as a whole becomes more productive, the fruits richer in vitamins, microelements and other substances for human health

The method is simple, environmentally friendly and effective. It can be used anywhere - in the garden, greenhouse, farm, on the balcony or even indoors.

Impact on humans

Living soil and the surrounding environment are the foundation of human health.

Microorganisms that renew and enrich the soil allow plants to absorb more nutrients and produce crops with higher nutritional value. Food grown this way is richer in antioxidants, enzymes, vitamins and trace elements that help strengthen the body. This means more energy, better immunity and greater resistance to disease.

This method is not just about gardening – it is about healthy living that begins under your feet – from living, renewed soil.

Impact on the planet's ecosystem

The “Thriving” method is a sustainable solution that simultaneously:

  • strengthens local food production and food security;
  • contributes to the restoration of planetary balance and resilience to global climate change.

It is a simple and practical opportunity for every person to become a restorer of the ecosystem in their own neighborhood, and therefore – step by step, on a global scale!

This method helps to solve several significant global problems:

Soil degradation and fertility loss

It revitalizes the soil by introducing diverse microorganisms into it, which improve soil structure, promote nutrient circulation, and restore the living layer of the soil.

Excessive water use and soil leaching

The activity of microorganisms improves the soil's ability to absorb and retain moisture, reducing the need for watering and preventing the leaching of valuable elements.

Biodiversity decline

In a rich microbiological environment, natural flora and fauna begin to recover. As a result, the local ecosystem is revitalized.

Dependence on chemical fertilizers and pesticides

Microbial fertilizer acts as a natural source of plant nutrition and protection, reducing the need for harmful chemicals and freeing the environment from their effects in the long term.

Soil pollution by synthetic fertilizers

Microorganisms help break down chemical residues, purify the soil, and promote its self-renewal abilities, returning life and balance to it.

Climate change and carbon sequestration

Microbially activated soil accumulates carbon in the form of humus, while promoting the formation of a resilient and carbon-sequestering ecosystem. This is a significant contribution to climate stabilization.
